Our House
We took a basic colonial design and gave it our own twist. We bought the land in spring of 99, poured the foundation and slab with embedded radiant heat tubing in August, framed in September and moved in Dec. 30, 1999. I like get things done!
We installed radiant heat throughout the house and studio building, all fed by one Veisman boiler. The house is still way over green energy and code specs. I used 2x6 construction with R-19 insulation and added one inch R-5 insulation board on the entire shell of the house making it R-24 rated. Standard of the day was R-11 walls.
My propane guy tells me we use half of what similar square footage is...
All the windows and doors are Andersen except for a Therma-tru insulated entry door. We used vinyl siding for lower maintenance costs. We used polyurethane on all the trim and it will never need painting either. I am a firm believer in low maintenance.
We put ceiling fans in all the rooms. In the summer the downstairs stays cool as long as we keep the doors closed on hot days. We use room AC for the bedroom on those rare hot days.
The upstairs hallway has all frosted glass doors to the bedrooms and lets natural light illuminate the hall. The master bedroom features a 14 foot cathedral ceiling and raised fireplace. The garage apartment is soundproofed from the main house so we do not hear guests up there. We also heated the garage with the radiant heat system.
The studio is a bit different. It is a building within a building, so I have R-30 walls and R-60 ceilings. I takes minimal energy to warm or cool and it stays that way for days on end. www.powerhousestudio.com
